New sales schools
New sales schools
Shirley Tansek/CSO
Field sales trainees (FSTs) now have the option of attending
sales schools in either Cupertino, California, or Toronto,
Canada. The Sales School Program has been updated. The
program is designed to graduate HP sales reps with
professional and business expertise; technical knowledge of
HP's solutions and services; and knowledge of HP
organizational structure, corporate objectives, and
standards of business conduct. The program takes FSTs
through several stages of development.
Step 1: Orientation information
FSTs are given orientation materials that include overviews
of HP, their region and country, office issues, and local
resources. The orientation materials must be completed
within 30 days.
Step 2: Basic Sales Training I (BSTI) SR1912
Over a two-week period, BSTI provides a variety of
fundamental business skills including the sales process,
time management, basic selling skills, terms and conditions,
contract programs, leasing, remarketing, professional image,
business conduct issues, personal styles, writing skills,
and presentation skills.
Step 3: Winning with Computer Systems Organization (CSO)
Products and Services (WCPS) SR2802
During a two and one-half week period, FSTs learn about
CSO products, support, networking, peripherals,
strategies, and key differentiators.
Step 4: Basic Sales Training II (BSTII) SR2912
During the two weeks of BSTII, FSTs learn PAR selling
skills, telephone prospecting, strategic selling,
consultative selling, and cold calls, and they complete a
sales process case study.
Step 5: Partnering with Your Customers SR2902
In a three-day business simulation FSTs learn financial
basics and receive a computer-based simulation on how a
company is run.
Step 6: Selling HP Solutions SR391
During this one-week course FSTs participate in a full sales
simulation in which retired corporate executives role play
customer executives. The executives provide experience to
the simulation and feedback to the FSTs during all phases of
the simulated sale.
Step 7: Environmental classes
In the last training step FSTs attend the appropriate
environmental training classes based on input from their
district managers. FSTs may choose from environmental
classes on engineering, manufacturing, IT and MIS, or
mainframe.

Open Systems Today introduces HP Focus
Open Systems Today introduces HP Focus
Hal Fletcher/GSY
As of September, Open Systems Today magazine is featuring HP
products, services, and HP Channel Partners in a new section
called HP Focus. HP Focus provides an opportunity to expose
customers to HP and to develop awareness for HP Channel
Partner's products inside the HP market. Open Systems Today
is undertaking HP Focus based on HP's growing leadership in
the open systems market and on incremental advertising
revenues they expect from new advertisers.
Open Systems Today is a biweekly magazine for data
processing and management information systems managers. The
magazine's circulation of over 100,000 is primarily in North
America and includes Europe and Asia Pacific. Qualified
subscribers must be purchasers of open systems-related
computer products and must buy over $100,000 annually to
receive a free subscription.
HP Focus, a 10-20-page section, will be distributed monthly
to subscribers who own, plan to buy, or have products that
run on HP equipment. Initially, HP Focus distribution will
be approximately 45,000. HP is not sponsoring HP Focus.
All articles will be written by the Open Systems Today staff
to maintain impartiality.
General Systems Division and Workstation Systems Group will
have joint advertising in each issue. The first issue
dates are September 28, October 12, and November 2.
Creating awareness for Channel Partner products is made
possible through cooperative advertising under the HP IMpact
Program.
For more information
Refer to HP IMpact Program Guidelines, P/N 5091-4223EUS.
Open Systems Today advertising contacts are Marlene Stork at
408-725-4309 for Channel Partners, or Terri DuFour at 408-

New insignia for HP Channel Partners
New insignia for HP Channel Partners
Marcia Nowicky/VMC
For the U.S. and Canada only
Americas Value-Added Channels Marketing Center (VMC), with
the approval of Corporate Legal and the Corporate Design
Center, is introducing a new insignia that HP Channel
Partners can use to promote their relationship with HP.
Channel Partners are eligible to display the insignia once
they have met the requirements: They must have a current
signed HP Channel Partners contract or catalog agreement
with HP; and they must have a signed copy of the HP Channel
Partner Insignia Exhibit, Exhibit I-5, on file with HP.
Channel Partners will automatically complete Exhibit I-5 as
part of their HP contract initial signing or renewal
process. HP is taking special steps to ensure that current
Channel Partners are aware of the new channel program
benefit.
In September, North American Field Organization (NAFO)
contracts reps sent copies of the insignia exhibit to
Channel Partners in the U.S. and Canada whose contracts they
manage. NAFO reps are responsible for tracking insignia
exhibits for their local Channel Partners and for forwarding
requests for insignia artwork to NAFO headquarters for
fulfillment.
Insignia exhibits will be handled differently for those
Channel Partners whose contracts are not managed by NAFO
contract reps. Several channel program managers have been
identified to handle this task for certified workstation
resellers (CWRs), distributor authorized resellers (DARs),
and complementary vendors (CVs). These program managers
will be responsible for mailing and tracking exhibits and
fulfilling insignia artwork requests.
In addition to exhibit mailings, the VMC is sending a
general mailing by October 1 to Channel Partner presidents,
executives, and marketing contacts listed in the VALID
database. The letter will inform them of the new insignia
and encourage them to sign and return the insignia exhibits
that their companies will receive separately.
Any Channel Partner that has signed and returned Exhibit I-5
is entitled to receive a copy of the Insignia Usage
Guidelines for HP Channel Partners, P/N 5091-4512EUS, which
contains the camera-ready artwork for the insignia. These
guidelines are available from the Literature Distribution
Center.
To request insignia artwork for Channel Partners, contact
the appropriate contracts manager: ISVs, VARs, Master VARs,
OEMs, SIs, distributors contact your local NAFO contracts

Indirect channel training update
Indirect channel training update
Shirley Tansek/CSO
The Indirect Channel Training momentum started this April
when Computer Systems Organization (CSO) Field Education and
Development (FEAD) authorized the majority of their self-
study materials for use by HP Channel Partners. The
momentum continued in June with workshops that provided
Channel Partners with product, application, and competitive
information. Among attendees 99 percent rated the workshops
relevant to their jobs and 97 percent stated they would use
the materials in the next 60 days.
Developing training for the indirect channel provides
challenges. Unlike HP sales reps, Channel Partners are not
dedicated to HP products and are harder to captivate. To
gain their share of mind, the program must be interactive
and motivational. These challenges were met on July 11 when
CSO FEAD broadcasted its first teleclass to over 130 Arrow
Electronics sales reps.
The Arrow Electronics sales reps received product
information on HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 workstations, X-
stations, and HP 9000 Series 800 business servers. In
addition to the product information, the broadcast covered
information on HP's distributor program, the Channel Partner
recruiting process, and competitive differentiators.
During the development phase, FEAD collaborated with HP
entities including the U.S. Field Organization, General
Systems Division, Workstation Systems Group, Value-Added
Channels Marketing Center, and the Americas Marketing Center
Competitive Group. Information presented in the teleclass
was leveraged from current product and marketing programs
and customized for the Arrow audience.
Although the teleclass was on Saturday, 80 percent of
attendees rated it worth their time and 89 percent agreed
that the HP managers demonstrated an excellent knowledge of
the subject matter. Based on the success of the July event,
future broadcasts are planned for other Channel Partners.

VMC mailing program update
VMC mailing program update
Sandra Brandon/VMC
For the U.S. and Canada only
Americas Value-Added Channels Marketing Center (VMC) is
announcing several changes to the mailing services programs
that it offers to HP Channel Partners.
The installed-base mailing program is being discontinued as
a formal program. HP is recommending that Channel Partners
use IMpact funds, co-op dollars, to buy or rent quality
mailing lists from outside sources such as the HP
Professional magazine or Interex to support direct mail
campaigns to HP customers. These sophisticated lists can be
targeted to reach designated individuals in selected
industries or markets improving Channel Partners' chances of
reaching their target audience and maximizing the return on
lead generation expenses.
A temporary hold has been placed on the Channel Partner-to-
Channel Partner, formerly VAB-to-VAB, mailing program. The
program allows Channel Partners with user referenced
solutions to reach other Channel Partners with information
about their products or to solicit cross-licensing
opportunities. Requests for this service have outstripped
the VMC's ability to fulfill them. The service is being
placed on hold pending an investigation into a new database
that will allow the continuation of this service.
For more information
Contact Sandra Brandon at 408 or Telnet 447-1325. To
inquire about outside mailing lists, contact for Interex,
Liwayway Gimenez at 408-746-1220 or HP Professional, Jane
Hope at 215-957-1500.

HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions Catalog delayed
HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions Catalog delayed
Marcia Nowicky/VMC
For the U.S. and Canada only
Due to fourth quarter budgetary restrictions, printing of
the 1992 edition of the HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions
catalog has been postponed until FY93. In anticipation of
Computer Systems Organization's new product introductions
planned for the first quarter of FY93, the next edition of
the catalog will be scheduled for second quarter FY93. This
should give HP Channel Partners in the U.S. and Canada
sufficient time to port their applications so they can be
listed appropriately in the revised catalog.
Continue to use the HP-UX and Domain/OS Solutions catalog
1991 edition, P/N 5091-2354EUS.

Computer Associates mainframe software on HP 9000 Series 800
Computer Associates mainframe software on HP 9000 Series
800
Nancy Twombly/GSY
Computer Associates (CA) and HP have announced plans to make
CA's leading mainframe applications software available on HP
9000 Series 800 systems. This marks the first time that CA's
mainframe financials, database, and fourth-generation
language, 4GL, applications will be made available on a UNIX
system. CA will develop Masterpiece Series financial
software, CA-IDMS and CA-DATACOM databases, and CA-ADS and
CA-IDEAL 4GLs for Series 800 business servers. These
products will be available in 1993.
The announcement extends a strategic alliance between the
two companies. They will provide a flexible, cost-effective
alternative to run for chief information officers from CA's
large mainframe users, who said they plan to incorporate
UNIX-based systems into their computing environments.
HP also announced plans to provide CA-UNICENTER, the first
mainframe-class, systems-management software for commercial
UNIX system environments, on all midrange and high-end
Series 800 systems. CA-UNICENTER is a single, integrated
solution providing automated storage management, production
control, security, resource accounting, and data center
automation.
Series 800 customers will receive from CA a no-cost 120-day
license with documentation for CA-UNICENTER. After 120
days, customers who want to continue using CA-UNICENTER will
license it directly from CA. The bundle promotion will
begin in the U.S. in the second quarter of 1993 after CA-
UNICENTER is available on the Series 800 platform and follow
for Europe and Asia Pacific.
Additional CA software available for HP-UX includes CA-DB, a
relational database-management system; CA-Classic/Open, a
human resource enterprise solution; CA-DISSPLA, a graphic
development system; and CA-20-20, a spreadsheet package.

workstation with the HP Apollo 9000 Model 750 running
software from Cadence Design Systems.
An integrated circuit (IC) design group in the company was
having difficulty meeting design time goals. The critical
success factor was the amount of time incurred to complete
the layout and routing of complex ICs. Because of the
amount of iterations needed in the design phase, performance
of both hardware and software was important.
One of the challenges was to reduce a two-day routing
period. The group standardized on Cadence's routers, Cell3,
and Gate Ensemble products and transitioned their
workstation engine from a competitor's 27 MIP workstation to
the Model 750. The power of the Model 750 and its 76.7 MIPS
allowed them to meet their productivity goals. IC placement
time was cut from six hours to three hours, global routing
was cut from two hours to one hour, and final routing was
cut from eight hours to three hours. The customer purchased
three additional systems.

DAT data compression support on Series 800
DAT data compression support on Series 800
Celia Watts/CPB
With the introduction of HP-UX 9.0 the HP Series 6400 Model
2000DC, P/N C1521B, is fully supported on HP 9000 Series 800
systems.
Features and benefits
The recent release of HP-UX 9.0 provides support of data
compression, startup/install/update, standard HP-UX backup
commands including fbackup and frecover, DDS Fastsearch
(fast random file access) via fbackup and frecover, and DAT
with HP Omniback and Omniback/Turbo.
P/N C1521B standalone SCSI DAT drive stores between 4 and 8
GB of data on a single 90-m digital data storage (DDS)
cassette and transfers up to 2.5 GB of data per hour. Data
compression performance is dependent on the type of data
being compressed. Transfer rates are host and operating
system dependent.
DAT with data compression is also supported under HP-UX 9.0
as an integrated drive in all HP 9000 Model 8X7s. Customers
should order Option AT2 to take advantage of the higher
performance DAT drive with data compression.

Information Advantage brings client/server objects to HP
9000
Leon Kessler/AIM
Information Advantage has signed an HP Channel Partner
agreement, formalizing the relationship with HP to jointly
market AXSYS Applications System application software on HP
9000 systems. The AXSYS Applications System is
client/server decision support software that allows
applications to be built on an existing information
technology foundation independent of database management
systems, networks, and PC hardware and software.
The AXSYS Applications System consists of three classes of
software.
AXSYS Object Manager--provides an object-oriented
environment for the development and execution of
applications on the HP 9000 platform; processes application
logic and communicates with SQL databases and PC tools over
local and remote network access protocols
AXSYS Object Library--consists of object-oriented algorithms
that are used as building blocks in the development of
applications. A growing library of application objects are
available to support applications including EIS, expert
reporting systems, financial budgeting, sales forecasting,
marketing and promotion analysis, and sales force
automation. Database links are available for communicating
with SQL databases and directly through EDA/SQL. AXSYS
objects support the integration of multiple internal and
external data sources, including A. C. Nielsen and IRI
retail sales data.
AXSYS Control Panel Links--connect graphical application
control screens on PCs with the AXSYS Object Manager; are
available for MS-DOS, Windows, Macintosh, and IBM/Metaphor
Data Interpretation System. Application control panels can
be developed using Channel Partner screen painting tools.
Application results can be seamlessly delivered to Lotus 1-
2-3, Excel, Harvard Graphics, Word Perfect, and other PC
tools.

Uninterruptible power supplies for standalone HP systems

Shirley Smith/CPS
For the U.S. and Canada only
Complementary Products Sunnyvale (CPS) has received calls
concerning the availability of uninterruptible power
supplies (UPS) for HP rackmounted computer systems. Many of
these questions were prompted by an error in the September
1992 HP 9000 Series 800 Configuration Guide (page 43). CPS
recommends only the following standalone UPS for HP's
standalone systems: APCC-600, APCC-1250, DELT-2026, and
DELT-2036.
Do not order the following UPS for computer systems, as they
are for use with test and measurement instruments and
equipment only: DELT-2026R2, DELT-2025R3, DELT-2036R2,
DELT-2035R1, DELT-2025R1, DELT-2035R2, DELT-2025R2, DELT-
2035R3, and E3664A.
For sales reps and customer engineers interested in using a
standalone UPS with racked systems, a converter box is
available directly from Deltec for approximately $200.

A print advertisement for HP GlancePlus will appear in three
Sun Microsystems customer-focused publications beginning in
September 1992 and running through June 1993. HP
GlancePlus, a performance monitoring tool for HP 9000 and
3000 systems, is available for SunSPARC systems. The ad
will appear in Sun World, Sun Expert, and Sun Focus.
The primary objective is to introduce and build awareness of
HP GlancePlus to the Sun user market. A lead-generating
direct mail campaign will parallel this program. During the
ad's run, the Business Development Group of the Software
Technology Division (SWT) will conduct and handle inbound
qualification and fulfillment requirements.

Revised white paper provides an overview of the PC versus
workstation issue, focusing on five myths that prevail among
PC users and MIS managers in the commercial marketplace.
Piece dispels the myths, which are that productivity
applications don't run on workstations; workstations cost
more than PCs; workstation software costs more than PC
software; PCs are easier to use than workstations; and PCs
and workstations don't mix.

425e/EVRX
Debbie Kalin/SWT
The current distribution of HP Engineering Graphics System
(EGS)/UX A.01.00, the final major release of HP EGS on the
HP-UX operating system, lacks graphics drivers to support
the EVRX. A patch is required to run HP EGS/UX A.01.00 on
HP Apollo 9000 Model425e/EVRX. HP EGS/UX was removed from
the September Corporate Price List and entered a standard
five-year support life.
Release A.01.00 requires the HP-UX 8.0 operating system,
includes the MI/Archive link, provides support of HP VUE,
and provides fixes to approximately 30 serious/critical
product defects and 10 learning product defects. It adds
support of Models 425e and 433s/t.
Model 425e does not support the VRX graphics top and is
configured only with the EVRX graphics top.
Ordering information
The patch is available by contacting Software Technology
Division technical support at 303 or Telnet 229-2222 or via
HP Desk at EESE HP4000.

Product line positioning
HP Vectra 486N PC provides a high-performance alternative to
the HP Vectra 386N PC for demanding application use in
networked environments. Customers who want 486 performance
have a choice between the HP Vectra 486U and 486N PC. HP
Vectra 486N PC is for price-sensitive customers who have
limited need for expandability or who use LAN servers for
high mass storage capacity and backup. HP Vectra 486U PC is
for customers looking for greater expandability for use as a
server and higher performance levels offered by external
cache for applications such as CAD.
Competitive positioning
HP Vectra 486N PC is optimized for advanced office users
connected to LANs. The Compaq Deskpro/i has similar
features to the HP Vectra 486N PC but lacks network
integration.

New PC advertising emphasizes price competitiveness
New PC advertising emphasizes price competitiveness
Kathy Wipperfeld/PPG
For the U.S. only
New national advertising began on September 21 that
positioned HP Vectra PCs as low-priced PCs that don't
surrender features.
The campaign leads with three teaser advertisements, all
with the headline, "We didn't start the PC price war." The
copy describes many of the features and benefits included in
our products at competitive prices: HP Vectra 486/25SX-
based PCs under $1,200 and HP Vectra 486/33DX-based PCs
under $1,600.
The ads will appear in general business publications such as
The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, PC Week, and
InfoWorld and run through December.

Introducing HP 2300/840L line printer
Alberto Jimenez/GPR
Product name and P/N: HP 2300/840 line printer, P/N C2354A
Description: 54 dbA 840 lines per minute (LPM) line impact
printer
Target market: medium/high-volume printing, departmental
environments, network environments
Guadalajara Printer Operation introduced a new line impact
printer at the Interex show in New Orleans, Louisiana. The
new printer, P/N C2354A, replaces P/N 2564C. It features a
new parchment white color that coordinates with HP LaserJet
printer products and provides a clear window for checking
printer output.
Features
location adaptability--new LCD 16 by 2 display that contains
descriptive messages and instructions in five languages:
English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish; front panel
keypad that is easily localized with the use of overlays;
four-position, switch-selectable power supply for all
voltage levels ranging from 90 to 264 VAC at either 50 or 60
Hz
new sound enclosure--reduces the noise level and allows
paper to be stacked at the back of the printer
improved connectivity--features the following interfaces:
HP-IB (direct channel only), Centronics, Centronics and
Printronix P-Series emulation, Serial RS-232C, Serial RS-
422A, Dataproducts Long Line (OEM only), and Dataproducts
Short Line (OEM only). The combination of either RS-232C or
RS-422A with Centronics in one interface will be available
January 1992 under the name Double I/O. Networks will also
be supported after January 1993 by a TCP/IP on HP-UX
interface.
standard character sets--add capabilities and flexibility:
Roman 8 - Size 10, 12, 15, and 16.7 characters per inch
(cpi), Roman 8 - 10 cpi near letter quality, barcodes, high-
speed 10 cpi Roman 8, high-speed 10 cpi U.S. ASCII, and
Postnet, the U.S. Postal Service barcode.
P/N C2354A represents a major step in price performance as
it comes fully loaded with character sets, has more
connectivity options, and has a lower basic unit price than
that of P/N 2564C.

Fraudulent toner activity
Fraudulent toner activity
Toni Berria/BPR
HP has received reports from HP Channel Partners of
fraudulent toner activity and is investigating as many of
these reports as possible.
In most cases, Channel Partners are contacted by
telemarketers who offer what is claimed to be a genuine HP
toner. The price is below that offered by HP, and payment
is required on delivery. The product is a refilled toner
cartridge in an HP look-alike box. The box is bleached
white with a blue stripe and purple label but contains no
HP logo. The new kraft box is also being copied.
One situation being investigated involves an exact copy of
the HP box except that there is no box certificate on the
bottom indicating origin and burst strength. Once the box
is opened, there are other indications that the cartridge
has been refilled.
If you suspect that customers have been approached with a
fraudulent product, contact Toni Berria at 208 or Telnet
323-4819.

host system) include HP Visual User Environment/RX (HP
VUE/RX).
Features
HP VUE/RX--HP's local user environment:
allows users to easily manage multiple windows and create
multiple workspaces within the X station, while providing
the familiar look and feel of HP VUE 3.0
combines the ease of use and functionality of a user
environment with local client benefits, such as host RAM and
MIPS offloading and reduced network traffic allowing users
to add X station seats to a host configuration with no
performance degradation
allows X station users access to HP VUE/RX regardless of
host configuration

between workspaces, a tool box icon for launching frequently
used applications/tools, and a local client launcher for
other local clients
Frontend HP VUE for system configurations with host RAM and
performance constraints:
offers the complete functionality of HP VUE 3.0
provides systems administrators with the flexibility to
configure systems to their particular needs
allows some HP VUE 3.0 operations to run on the host while
running the VUE window manager within the X station
provides drag-and-drop capability and a workspace control
panel
The new software includes features that provide system
administrators and users with the flexibility to configure
their environments.
local window managers and terminal emulators--OSF/Motif 1.2
Window Manager (mwm), Tom Window Manager (twm), Xterm, and
HPterm are all offered as local clients. All local clients,
including HP VUE/RX and Frontend HP VUE are downloadable
clients that can be started and terminated at the user's
request. Memory used by the local client is returned when
the client is terminated.
selectable/downloadable extensions--allow system
administrators to selectively download feature extensions to
the X station's base software, which optimizes X station
resources while satisfying end user requirements. Three
extensions will initially be provided: SharedX extension;
MIT Multibuffering extension; and HP Multibuffering
extension.
X11R5 server support--includes the use of an optional font
server and arc drawing performance enhancements
performance enhancements--X11 performance will increase by
over 60 percent for HP 700/RX Model 19Ca, 16Ca, 19Ga; the
X11perf rating will be 2,800 X11perfs; the Xstone rating
will increase from 86,000 Xstones to 93,000 Xstones.
simple network management protocol reset--allows hard
terminal restarting from remote locations, enabling systems
administrators to administer X stations more quickly and
easily
